Viral/Online Marketing Class Response

In class, we talked about the differences between viral marketing online as compared to traditional marketing. Online marketing, in my own words, is a strategy used to gain an online following, as well as, to promote a message/product on the internet. There were five key factors that made viral marketing successful. Those included: Interesting Appeal, Accessibility, Engagement (MAIN model - Modality, Agent (source of info), Interactivity, and Navigational Function), Promotion giveaway, and not awkwardness. We also explained that online marketing used word-of-mouth, but in internet terms, meaning that social media sharing is the equivalent of re-telling a message to a friend in traditional marketing.

Traditional marketing still has it's place.. billboards on highways, concert flyers around local business, and giant posters on sides of city buildings, however, advertisements typically contain something like "Find us on Facebook and Twitter or #Example." This shows that the integration and switch to online marketing will probably dominate markets eventually. There is even electronic billboards now so the possibilities continue to be discovered.

Online marketing is able to increase exposure and influence more than traditional media. It's a great opportunity to get your product out, but comes with many cons too. For instance, now you can trending one hour but something else the next hour. Also, more personal information can be exploited as we all subscribe to the system. Other countries and Apps have been known to use information or your pictures in countries advertisements overseas. We all run the risk of being exploited under the online marketing industry.

  1. I agree with you that traditional marketing still has its place and I think it will continue to have its place even though we are becoming an increasingly digitized world.
Also, you raised some good points when you mentioned that digital marketing although its great and has several pros it also has a lot of cons. The biggest problem, in my opinion with online or digital marketing is that there is so so so much content out there and it can be a real struggle to get your content noticed and not drown in sea of irrelevance.

  2. I agree with you Becca and Carol too, but the good thing about online marketing is that I think it provides better repetition on a series of multiple pages. An example would be seeing the same product you recently searched come up on every other web pages side bar asking if you'd like to buy the same product. I can see what you mean by having an abundance of content , Becca. Especially when it comes down to something as simple as this class, we all are creating websites essentially to sell ourselves. Putting that on a Online Marketing scale sounds close close to impossible to even match up a small user run company verses the large corporate companies that dominate the market. So from a small user stance I could see how getting your name or brand could start to become increasingly difficult in the future.

  3. I also find that the two will become integrated into one eventually. Elias, I also talked about how product search will equate to an influx of advertisements for that on websites. I think that this is fascinating because it streamlines the target audience search. Also, I think that the amount of advertisements on the internet could be a benefit to us consumers because it forces companies to make their ads engaging and eye catching.

  4. I like how you mentioned that traditional marketing techniques are starting to reference online marketing. Many TV commercials have begun putting Facebook or Instagram information in them in order to have potential customers learn more about the product. I think this goes to show that online marketing is the future of marketing.

  6. I agree when you stated "We also explained that online marketing used word-of-mouth, but in internet terms, meaning that social media sharing is the equivalent of re-telling a message to a friend in traditional marketing". There have been many times that I have first learned about the release of a new product or simply seen a product being promoted through social media sites, especially Facebook.
